Originally by: Jesters Knight if you place a buy order where an NPC will sell items, and your buy order is for more than the "reset" amount will the NPC ever fill the order?
Yup.
NPC trade goods prices "float" in a certain range.
Say: -Station A sells gizmo from 150isk to 300isk, there are 2000 units available. -Station B buys gizmo from 250isk to 400isk, they buy 1000 units.
So, suppose nobody else is buying/selling, you will find A selling at 150, and B buying at 400 (the best profit margin)
If you buy 2000 units in A, the price will increase. The formula is a bit of a dark art, but roughly it will go to a sell price of 200 isk. If you buy 2000 units again, it will jump to some 250 or so, until it reaches the top of the sell price.
(the above numbers are just an example, but that is how it works; NPCs never run dry, they just raise the price; the 'units available' are roughly how much you can buy before they raise the price again)
Similarly, when you sell the gizmo at the B station, you will sell 1000 units for 400... then another 1000 units for less (say 330-ish), then another 1000 for 250-ish and then gets stuck there. Again, they keep buying forever.
The thing is, as you can see, that after a couple of "runs" the profit margin disappears (station A sells for 300, station B buys for 250... not a smart way to make isk, lemme tell ya).
Quote: also if you sell an item for a price they pay will the market ever reset to fill that order either?
The prices will slowly "reset" (the sell price will drease, the buy price will increase) as long as nobody else is buying/selling.
The remote orders work exactly the same way: you leave your batch of units there, the NPC will buy/sell his alloted quantity when he reaches the price.
Notice that if -Station A sells gizmo for 150 up to 300 -You put a buy order for 150 -Other player keep buying from the NPC keeping the price at 160 or higher
you will never fill the order (same goes for selling)
(note: this is the competitive aspect of NPC trading that some people *winks at Rod* just don't get, but that is another discussion.)
Quote: if not then what is the point of the remote buy/sell skills?
There is a LOT of stuff and mountains of isk to be made with them. Grinders do it in belts and gates, smart dudes do it while docked.
More discussion on the trade skills here.
